Pikeview Quarry Reclamation Project Highlight - Problem: After decades of mining operations, the City of Colorado Springs was left with a noticeable mark from the Pikeview Quarry. Known by locals as “The Scar,” Pikeview Quarry ceased operations in 2018 and now is working to turn the scar green. The goal of the project is to revegetate the Pikeview Quarry scar and restore the natural vegetation. Eventually, the city hopes to turn the area into a recreational park for the community. Solution: The large 125+ acre reclamation project requires a mix of products and solutions to restore and stabilize the depleted soil. Bowman Construction Supply is supplying a variety of erosion control materials, seed, soil amendments and fertilizers to support this project. One product in particular used on this project is Profile Products’ ProGanics® DUAL™, a Biotic Erosion Control Matrix. ProGanics...Keep Reading
Design Considerations for Steep Slopes - The best form of erosion control is sustainable vegetation establishment. But what can be done for steep slopes? The Green Armor system begins with Futerra® Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) which provides a permanent, lofty and open matrix. It is then hydraulically infilled with Flexterra® HPFGM® (High Performance-Flexible Growth Medium®) or ProGanics Dual Biotic Soil Media, to intimately bond soil and seeds while accelerating growth. This unique system protects against elevated water velocities and shear forces while encouraging rapid establishment and permanent reinforcement of denser vegetation...Keep Reading

Engineer's Note from Bill Murphy, P.E.: Take a Walk - Friends, I have heard the same advice from a number of sources, so it is starting to resonate with me. Take a walk. If work is stressful or life is hard and you need a break, take a walk. If you struggle to focus or need to recharge, take a walk. If you wonder about your purpose or cannot identify your “why”, take a walk. The past several months I have built regular walks back into my daily routines. Morning, noon or night. During hot summer days, it is best to walk early in the morning or late in the day. Put away your phone. Don’t be in a hurry. Notice the ground, the grass, the trees, the streams, the clouds or the stars. It helps me remember my “why” and appreciate our many blessings. A little effort in taking care of our soil and our plants makes a significant impact on water quality and the overall health of our natural environment. Please let us help you improve your community’s environment...Keep Reading
